Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned till noon on Monday following loud protests and repeated disruptions by opposition MPs, who demanded immediate debates on multiple contentious issues including Operation Sindoor and the voter list revision exercise in Bihar.
In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla was forced to adjourn the proceedings during Question Hour, as opposition members stormed the Well of the House, shouting slogans and displaying placards. The Speaker condemned their actions, saying they were deliberately disrupting the session and diminishing the dignity of Parliament.
“Do you not want to discuss Operation Sindoor? Question Hour is crucial for members, and the public is watching these disruptions,” Birla said, urging Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to control his party MPs.
Simultaneously, in the Rajya Sabha, Deputy Chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh rejected several adjournment notices, including one by AAP MP Sanjay Singh demanding a discussion on the closure of government schools in Uttar Pradesh. His decision prompted protests from opposition members, resulting in the Upper House also being adjourned till 12 noon.
Singh noted that 26 adjournment motions were declined for not conforming to procedural rules and reminded members to submit motions via the Digital Sansad portal, as physical submissions have been discontinued.
Meanwhile, ahead of the scheduled 16-hour-long discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged the opposition to refrain from making statements that echo “Pakistan’s language.”
“The Opposition, especially the Congress, must not harm India’s interests or undermine the armed forces,” Rijiju told ANI.
The Operation Sindoor debate, centered on India’s military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, is expected to spark a heated exchange between the government and the opposition. The attack killed 26 civilians, prompting precision strikes by India targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Since the Monsoon Session began on July 21, Parliament has seen near-daily disruptions. The opposition continues to demand clarity on Operation Sindoor, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to US President Donald Trump’s claims of brokering an India-Pakistan ceasefire.
The special discussion on Operation Sindoor is scheduled to resume later today in the Lok Sabha and in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
